The Basics of Modular Fixturing

Modular fixturing systems can basically be divided into six groups of items:

1. Base

This may be a base plate, grid base plate or frame made of bars. Additional bars will adopt work piece locators.

2. Adjustment elements

Positioning on base columns/supports is limited to grid position. To move off grid some kind of adjustment element is required. ALUFIX offers a large range of element which allow movement off-grid from simple components like 1D bar to sophisticated cross slides or 3D adjustment blocks.

3. Contact Points

These elements represent the interface between part and fixture and range from standard items such as ball points to contour blocks which are designed and manufactured acc. to customer data.

4. Clamps

In order to stop a part moving out of position, i.e. if fixture is moved or knocked, some form of clamp is necessary. The ALUFIX hold-down spring used together with column and holder has proven unbeatable for this job. For heavier, larger parts toggle clamps may be used.

5. Connection elements

ALUFIX has two different kinds of connection elements:

  1. Screw connectors are used for fixtures with long lives, which are not changed often, moved around a lot or are in a stressful environment.
  2. Quick connectors are used for fixtures which may be changed often, have short lives, are always in one location (measuring room), are in a stress-free environment.

ll above items are available in ALUFIX in different, combinable system sizes.
